A dental implant is a small metal post or screw that is surgically placed into the jawbone to serve as a replacement for the root of a missing tooth. The implant is then topped with a custom-made restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture, to provide a functional and aesthetically pleasing solution for missing teeth. The main advantage of dental implants is that they mimic the natural tooth root and provide a long-lasting, stable solution for missing teeth.
Unlike bridges or dentures, dental implants do not rely on adjacent teeth for support, and they do not cause any damage to existing healthy teeth. In addition, dental implants can help preserve the health and structure of the jawbone, which can deteriorate after tooth loss. The implant itself is the screw-like portion that goes into your bone which takes a few months to heal, afterwards an abutment is placed which is what sticks out of the implant and supports the crown which is the part you can actually eat with.
